Seaton Carew Golf Club (Micklem)
Links Course in Hartlepool, England
Seaton Carew Golf Club, located in Hartlepool, England, is a historic links course with a rich heritage dating back to 1874, making it the tenth oldest golf club in England. Originally known as the Durham and Yorkshire Golf Club, its name changed in 1887. The course has evolved over time, notably with a redesign in 1924 by the renowned architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who described it as a "fine piece of golfing country". In the 1970s, four additional holes, known as the Brabazon Loop, were added by Frank Pennink, resulting in a unique 22-hole layout that allows for five different course configurations, including the Micklem course. The Micklem layout, a par 71 measuring 6,594 yards from the white tees, was devised by Gerald Micklem and has been used for events such as the Carris Trophy. The course is known for its fast-draining sandy soil, tightly mown fairways, and challenging links features, including deep, steeply-faced bunkers and undulating greens, with the wind often playing a significant factor. Seaton Carew has a history of hosting national and international amateur events, such as the Brabazon Trophy and the English Amateur Championship.
