Initially a nine-hole layout, it was extended to 18 holes in 1894. Over the years, notable architects including Willie Park Jr. Junior, James Braid, and Frank Pennink have contributed to its design, with Braid's 1930s revisions having a significant and lasting impact. The course is known for its natural setting among windswept dunes, offering panoramic views of the coastline, Holy Island, and Bamburgh Castle. As a testament to its quality, Goswick has served as a regional qualifying venue for The Open Championship on multiple occasions.
