Whitley Bay Golf Club

Whitley Bay Golf Club, founded in 1890, is situated in Whitley Bay, England, close to the Northumberland coastline. The club's history involves several location changes before settling at its current site in 1906. Originally a 9-hole winter course on Whitley Links, the club moved to a summer course near St Mary's Island before relocating further inland. The present 18-hole course was extended by Ted Ray, a 1912 Open Champion. While James Braid reviewed the course in 1931, there is no record of subsequent changes by him. The course underwent significant reinstatement after opencast mining between 1949 and 1955. More recent improvements since 2015 have focused on redesigning holes on a flatter area known as 'the field', including the addition of new greens and bunkers. The course is known for its undulating terrain, sharing characteristics of both parkland and heathland, with a dene that influences play on several holes, demanding careful tee shots. The course, measuring around 6579 yards from the white tees with a par of 72, provides a good test of golf and has hosted various events, including a European Tour event in 1977 called the Callers of Newcastle.
