Purley Downs Golf Club, established in 1894 and designed by the esteemed John Henry Taylor, offers a classic downland golfing experience in Surrey, England. The course is renowned for its free-draining chalk-based terrain, ensuring year-round playability. The layout features gently undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and provides some impressive views over the London skyline from its elevated position. Notably, the course opens with a memorable par-3, often cited as one of the best opening par-3s in golf. While not a regular Open Championship venue, Purley Downs has hosted significant events in its history, including the News of the World Professional Matchplay in 1933, won by Percy Alliss. The club also occasionally features in the qualifying events for the Surrey Order of Merit.
