Hesketh Golf Club, established in 1885, holds the distinction of being the oldest golf club in Southport. Situated at the northern end of the region's sand dune system, the course presents a blend of traditional links and parkland characteristics, set amidst Victorian architecture and adjacent to a nationally recognized nature reserve. Designed with input from notable architects including George Lowe and James Braid, the layout has also seen more recent modifications. The club has a history of hosting significant amateur events and is regularly chosen as a Regional Qualifying venue when The Open Championship is played at nearby Royal Birkdale, a role it is confirmed to continue from 2023 to 2026. The course offers a varied test of golf, with holes that meander through dunes complemented by those bordering the Ribble estuary. The par-3 16th hole, in particular, is often remarked upon.
