Having occupied its current site for over a century, the course has been refined by notable architects including James Braid, John Henry Taylor, and Frederick Hawtree. More recent contributions have come from architects like Ebert (Martin Ebert). The course features a figure-of-eight layout and incorporates a meandering stream, notably on the opening hole and three par threes. Wilmslow has a history of hosting significant events, including the Greater Manchester Open and the Martini International, and has also served as a regional qualifying venue for The Open on multiple occasions between 1993-1998 and in 2001.
