London Scottish Golf Club

London Scottish Golf Club, situated on Wimbledon Common, is a club with a notable history, often cited as being among the oldest in England. Founded in 1865 by members of the London Scottish Volunteer Rifles, the course was originally just seven holes and was expanded to 18 holes in 1871 by Tom Dunn. It holds the distinction of being one of the first 18-hole courses in England. The course itself is set on heath and woodland, with some holes originally laid out along rifle ranges. A unique aspect of playing here is the local byelaw requiring golfers to wear a pillar box red upper garment, a tradition stemming from the course's location on public land. The wood-panelled clubhouse, a Grade II listed building, dates back to 1897 and is a rare example of a Victorian golf pavilion. Due to its protected status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the course notably features no sand bunkers, relying instead on grass hazards. While it may not be the longest course by contemporary standards, its tight layout through mature trees, gorse, and heather presents a good test of accuracy. The club does not appear to have a history as an Open Championship Qualifying venue.
