Lewes Golf Club

Lewes Golf Club, established in 1896, is an 18-hole downland course set high on the South Downs in East Sussex, England. The club was the fifteenth to be established in Sussex during a boom in golf course building in the late 1880s and 1890s. Initially a nine-hole course built by Mr John Morris, it was extended to 18 holes in 1898 by John (Jack) Rowe, who was the professional at Royal Ashdown. Lewes had the distinction of holding the first professional tournament in 1900 organised by the Sussex County Golf Union, which was won by Jack White, the 1904 Open Champion. The course is known for its natural downland contours, rolling fairways, and fast greens. Its elevated position provides panoramic views of the historic town of Lewes, the South Downs, and the Sussex countryside. The chalk-based geology ensures good drainage, making it playable year-round. The course offers a traditional test with sloping lies, and the wind can significantly influence play. The layout includes challenging holes such as the par-5 9th and the long downhill par-3 12th. While not among the UK's most famous courses, it is considered an outstanding example of hilly, downland golf and is recognized as a top 100 Fine Running course in England. There is no indication that Lewes Golf Club has been used as an Open Qualifying location.
