Chelmsford Golf Club

Chelmsford Golf Club, located in England, boasts a rich history dating back to 1893 when it was founded on Galleywood Common, sharing space with horse racing. The club moved to its current Widford site in 1910, with James Braid confirming the suitability of the land for golf. The parkland course was originally laid out by James MacDonald in 1911. Over the years, the course has seen significant changes, including a remodelling in 1924 by renowned architect Harry Colt, much of whose work remains evident today. Further land acquisitions and changes, particularly after the 1987 hurricane which, despite felling many trees, improved air movement and course dryness, have shaped the present compact layout. The course is laid out across a valley and, while not overly long at just under 6,000 yards with a par of 68, it offers a testing round with tight fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and quick greens. The course has hosted county championships. Notably, players from Chelmsford have featured in Open Qualifying events.
