4:30am alarms. Waterproofs in the boot. Coffee in hand somewhere on the west coast ferry route. Not exactly the glamorous side of golf travel people usually see on Instagram, but this is a real part of what we do at Golf Sherpa.
Most people don’t see the work that goes into an event long before the first tee shot. Because our job isn’t just to recommend golf venues or provide off-the-shelf guidance. It’s to understand them deeply enough that when a client asks us:
- “Would this suit our group?”
- “How do we make the most of our event?”
- “What’s the course experience actually like?”
…we can answer from genuine experience, not marketing brochures.
A day on these visits usually involves far more than simply playing golf. It’s touring and seeing which spaces work best for society trips, corporate groups or charity events. It’s speaking to the wonderful venue teams about logistics, transport timings, dining experiences, And most importantly how the course ‘behaves’. All these factors impact the flow of a golf itinerary, and learning the personality of a place and the type of golfer who will love it most helps us create a better experience.
Back in November, that meant a long trek through the west coast, notebooks in hand, and a few days spent properly experiencing two of Scotland’s most unique golf destinations. The Machrie on Islay and Machrihanish Dunes in Campbeltown
For our Machrihanish/Machrie swing this meant battling the harsh November coastal conditions. Machrihanish Dunes The 7,082 yards links course, is a true masterpiece of natural design, carved directly through protected dunes and ranked among the UK’s top courses. It’s golf at its most authentic, just wind, scenic dunes, and creative shot making. After a long drive we were greeted by wandering sheep and a cosy little club house where the friendly starter/receptionist/local historian gave us a rundown of everything we needed to know. We chatted to her so long we almost missed our tee time.

The course itself isn’t one that you play with a scorecard in hand. The fairways twist through wild contours, the greens flow with the landscape, and every shot demands imagination. It’s the kind of course that humbles you & thrills you in equal measure.
A relaxing evening saw us visiting the Royal Hotel for some fine local food before unwinding at our cottage by the beach and Ugadale hotel, just a stones throw from the local pub and the famous Machrihanish golf Cub first tee looking out over the bay. This is one for the purists.

At The Machrie, we experienced a venue that perfectly balances world class golf with a calm, welcoming atmosphere and staff that makes groups instantly relax the moment they arrive. Those details matter.
The Machrie on Islay is one of Scotland’s most unique golf escapes. what makes the Machrie particularly appealing for golf tourists is how relaxed the whole experience feels. You never feel rushed. It’s easy to get into a rhythm here. The course is walkable, the views constantly change, and there’s a sense that you’re playing in your own corner of the world.

Off the course, The Machrie is a masterclass in understated luxury overlooking the links and Laggan Bay. The award-winning restaurant and bar serves local seafood with panoramic views to review every shot. After golf, unwind in the outdoor hot tubs or sauna garden, explore Islay’s famous distilleries, or enjoy a quiet evening by the fire. With a six-hole Wee Course and The Hebrides putting course layout just steps from the rooms room, The Machrie lets you play, relax, and reconnect at your own pace. Just what you need for a golf event.

When we help organise a golf trip, event or client experience, our value comes from helping people avoid disappointment and maximise the moments they’ll remember.
That’s the difference between booking an untailored package or generic scoring app and having someone genuinely guide you through it. Knowing:
• Which venue best suits a relaxed social group vs a serious golf trip
• How weather and daylight affect itinerary planning year round
• Which hidden details elevate the overall experience
• How to create an itinerary that avoids delays, runs seamlessly and avoids the stress
Anyone can post pretty golf photos. We’d rather put the work in behind the scenes, so our clients get the very best experience possible.
This is why you need a Golf Sherpa.
