Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, founded in 1780 as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, is the sixth oldest golf club in the world. Its championship course, Balgownie, opened in 1888, moving from the city's links to its current location north of the River Don. The Balgownie course is a classic links layout, originally designed by brothers Archie and Robert Simpson and later modified by James Braid and others, running essentially out and back along the North Sea shore. The outward nine is particularly acclaimed as one of the best stretches of links golf anywhere, winding through impressive dune formations, while the inward nine returns over a flatter plateau with sea views. Royal Aberdeen has hosted significant tournaments including the Senior British Open, the Walker Cup, and the Scottish Open. Visitors are welcome, typically requiring a handicap certificate of 24 or under due to the challenging nature of the course. The club offers facilities such as a pro shop, putting green, changing rooms, catering, club hire, trolley hire, and caddie hire.
