Wearside Golf Club ( Course)

Nestled between the River Wear and Penshaw Monument, Wearside Golf Club, founded in 1892, is one of the oldest parkland courses in the North East of England. Notably, it's one of the few courses in Britain to commence with a par 3 and conclude with a par 5, playing away from the clubhouse. Harry Vardon, the All-England Champion, played an exhibition match here in 1899 and was subsequently commissioned to extend the course to 18 holes, which opened in 1901. The course has a history of resilience, being used for cattle grazing during WWI and having fairways ploughed for crops in WWII, resulting in undulations still present today. While not a regular Open Qualifying venue, the club has a rich history of hosting amateur events and has produced players with national and international honours. The course offers a variety of holes with well-regarded greens, providing an enjoyable and fair challenge.
