The Addington Golf Club

The Addington Golf Club, established in 1913 and designed by Abercromby, J.F. (John Frederick), is a notable heathland course located near Croydon, south of central London in England. The course is known for its strategic design, dramatic elevation changes, and fairways that wind through mature pine and birch trees, offering glimpses of the London skyline. Originally, the course was intended to address the overcrowded golf courses around London. While Abercromby led the design, Harry Colt was also involved as a consultant. The club enjoyed popularity in the 1920s and 30s and was a favourite of notable figures, including King George VI. The course features an unusual number of par threes and requires a variety of shots. The 13th hole, a par three, was famously described by golf writer Henry Longhurst. The Addington has undergone restoration work to return it closer to Abercromby's original vision, including tree clearance. The Addington was acquired by the Altonwood Group in 2006.
