South Beds Golf Club (Galley Hill)

South Beds Golf Club, situated on the free-draining chalk hills of Galley and Warden, offers a historic golfing experience in Bedfordshire. Founded in 1892, the club initially featured wattle sheep hurdles as hazards before evolving into the current 27-hole complex in the mid-1970s. The 18-hole Galley Hill course, a par 71, is considered a strong test and has been described as "Bedfordshire's hidden gem" by Harry Vardon, who was influential in the course's early design. The course presents a classic downland challenge with undulating terrain, tree-lined fairways, and strategically placed bunkers. While not a regular Open Qualifying venue, the club has hosted significant amateur events, including the England Golf's South East Group Men's County Qualifier. The unpredictable winds across the hills add a dynamic element to each round.
