Royal West Norfolk Golf Club
Links Course in King's Lynn, England
Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, often called 'Brancaster', is a historic links course in Norfolk, England, founded in 1892. Designed by Holcombe Ingleby with assistance from Horace Hutchinson, the course occupies a narrow strip of land between Brancaster Bay and the salt marshes. This unique location means the course is affected by tides, with the access road and parts of the course becoming inaccessible at high tide, effectively turning it into an island. The layout largely follows Ingleby's original design, featuring an out and back routing. While not long by modern standards at around 6,457 yards with a par of 71, its coastal position exposes it to challenging winds. The course is known for its firm links turf, true greens, and distinctive boarded bunkers. It is primarily a two-ball course, with a strong tradition of foursomes play, contributing to rounds typically being completed in around three hours. The club has a rich heritage, receiving its 'Royal' designation from Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales and having had several royal patrons and captains over the years. Royal West Norfolk has been a venue for regional qualifying for the Golf Club Secretary – Open Championship.
