Harrogate Golf Club, established in 1892, is the oldest golf club in Harrogate and holds a respected place in English golf history. Initially a 9-hole course designed by Willie Park Jr. Jnr, it relocated in 1899. The current 18-hole parkland layout, set on gently undulating, wooded terrain, was laid out by Alex Herd and later saw recommendations from Harry Colt and redesign work on the 17th green by Alister Alister MacKenzie. The course, while not exceptionally long by modern standards at around 6198 to 6211 yards, is considered a fair test requiring accuracy due to its tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers and Mackenzie-style greens. It features five par 3s and a challenging finish with several strong par 4s on the back nine. Harrogate Golf Club has a history of hosting county and regional amateur events, including the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs Centenary Championship in 1989. While not a consistent Open Qualifying venue, it has a connection through its history with figures like Harry Vardon and Alister MacKenzie.
