Heathland/Parkland Course in Doncaster, England
Doncaster Golf Club, founded in 1894, moved to its current location, known as "The Warren," in 1909. The course was initially laid out as nine holes before being extended to eighteen in 1914 with input from notable architects including Dr Alister Alister MacKenzie and James Braid. MacKenzie remarked on the sandy nature of the subsoil, likening it to seaside links. Major changes occurred in the 1970s due to the construction of the M18 motorway, with Hawtree & Son redesigning several holes. These later holes are described as having a more "American" style with larger greens and bunkers, creating a contrast with the earlier heathland holes. Recent work, advised by Jonathan Gaunt, has focused on restoring the heathland environment and remodelling bunkers. The course is set on sandy subsoil, providing excellent drainage and allowing for play year-round. It presents a mix of heathland and parkland characteristics, requiring accuracy. While not overly long, it offers a good test of golf. The course has hosted regional tournaments.
