West Sussex Golf Club

Nestled within the South Downs, West Sussex Golf Club, often referred to as Pulborough, is a distinguished heathland course with a rich history dating back to its official opening in 1931. Conceived by Commander George Hillyard, the course was brought to life by the renowned architects Guy Campbell (Sir Guy Campbell) and Major Cecil Key Hutchison, with Stafford Vere Hotchkin also credited for his significant contributions. These designers are celebrated for crafting one of England's most natural and aesthetically pleasing courses on sandy subsoil, which ensures excellent drainage and year-round playability. Over the years, while the core layout has remained largely untouched, the course has seen the growth of numerous pine and birch trees planted in the 1930s, transforming the landscape from an open heath to a more wooded environment. Notable alterations include the lengthening of several holes and the transformation of the 6th hole from a dogleg par four to a challenging par three. The course, a par 68, is known for its strategic bunkering and the prominent presence of heather, demanding thoughtful shot-making. While not a championship-length course, its design provides a stern test for golfers of all abilities. The club has previously served as a regional qualifying venue for The Open Championship.
