Vicars Cross Golf Club
Parkland Course in Chester, England
Nestled in the Cheshire countryside, Vicars Cross Golf Club dates back to 1939, having risen from the closure of the nearby Blacon Point Golf Club. The initial layout of eleven holes was designed by Eric Parr, the former professional at Blacon Point, with the assistance of Cyril Hughes from Royal Liverpool. The course officially opened in May 1939, though the full 18 holes weren't completed for several more years due to the intervention of World War II, during which the land was used for agriculture and even housed American soldiers. Following the war, the course was restored and reopened in March 1947. Today, Vicars Cross is a mature parkland course known for its tree-lined fairways and undulating greens. While it is a private club, visitors are welcome. The course has undergone significant development, including the reconstruction of greens and bunkers to USGA standards under the guidance of a leading British golf course architect, noted as Ken Moodie (Ken Moody) in some sources. The course requires thoughtful shot-making and presents a fair test for golfers of various abilities, with strategically placed bunkers and water hazards adding to the challenge. Vicars Cross has also been a venue for Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship.
