About Thorpe Hall Golf Club

Thorpe Hall Golf Club, situated in Essex, England, offers a parkland course experience. The club has a notable history, with its origins tracing back to 1906 when Colonel Ynyr Henry Burges began transforming farmland into a golf course, which formally opened in 1907. A description from 1907 highlighted the quality of the greens, noting their close, short turf and naturally undulating character, a standard the course reportedly maintains today. The course, although considered modest in length by contemporary standards, presents challenges through its mature trees lining the fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The club's history also includes a period of closure during the Second World War when the fairways were dug up. Two notable figures in golf administration, Sir Michael Bonallack and Peter Dawson, were associated with Thorpe Hall Golf Club before serving as Secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews. Thorpe Hall Golf Club has been a venue for Open Qualifying.
