Royal Liverpool Golf Club, affectionately known as Hoylake, is a historic links located in England. Founded in 1869 on a former racecourse, it quickly gained prominence, receiving its 'Royal' designation in 1871. The original layout by Robert Chambers and George Morris was expanded, with significant architectural contributions later made by Harry Colt. Hoylake holds a special place in the history of amateur golf, having hosted the inaugural Amateur Championship in 1885 and the first international match between Great Britain and the United States in 1921, the precursor to the Walker Cup. The course itself is a classic links test. While the terrain is generally level, the holes nearest the coast are routed through more undulating sandhills. The strategic challenge is amplified by the ever-present wind, a defining characteristic of seaside golf. Royal Liverpool has been a frequent host of The Open Championship, witnessing iconic victories throughout its history. Nearby, West Lancashire Golf Club has served as a venue for Final Qualifying for The Open, highlighting the strong golfing pedigree of the region.
