Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club, founded in 1903, presents a tale of two distinct golfing landscapes. Initially an inland course, the club acquired cliff-top land in 1921, bringing in the renowned architect Dr. Alister Alister MacKenzie to route a new 18-hole layout. MacKenzie, known for his work at Augusta National and Cypress Point, applied his principles of blending courses into their natural surroundings. The course is now famously divided by a road, with the opening holes and the final stretch playing through rolling parkland, while holes four to ten are perched dramatically on the cliff tops, offering inspiring views of the South Bay and coastline. Despite modifications over the years, including changes due to coastal erosion in the 1980s and road construction in the 2000s, the course retains MacKenzie's influence, particularly in the design of the greens. The club has a history of hosting regional, county, and national events, including being a joint host of the English Amateur Championship in 2016. It has also been used as a venue for Open Regional Qualifying.
