About Ellesmere Port Golf Club (Hooton)
Ellesmere Port Golf Club, formerly known as Hooton Golf Club, is an 18-hole parkland course located in Cheshire, England. The course, which was re-opened in April 2019 as The Ian Woosnam Golf Academy, offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience with a mix of brooks, ponds, mature trees, and strategically placed bunkers. The layout, stretching over 6296 yards with a par of 71 from the white tees, provides a good test for golfers of varying abilities. The closing four holes are particularly notable, with the 17th, a 189-yard par 3, standing out as the signature hole, demanding a precise shot to a green guarded by woodland and a ditch. While the historical origins of golf in the immediate Hooton area can be traced back to the early 1900s with a 9-hole course on farmland, Hooton Golf Club itself was founded in 1913, initially as Hooton Park Golf Club, expanding to 18 holes by the mid-1920s. The land was leased from Sir Charles Stanley of Hooton Park. The club became a registered Limited Company in 1924. There is no readily available information to suggest that Ellesmere Port Golf Club or its predecessor, Hooton Golf Club, has been used as an Open Qualifying location.
