Local Gentlemen

The term 'Local Gentlemen' is not a specific golf course architect but rather a collective description for the early, often amateur, designers who laid out many foundational golf courses. In the formative years of golf, particularly before professional architecture became common, club members, landowners, or local enthusiasts with a passion for the game would design courses on available land, relying on their practical knowledge and the natural topography rather than formal design principles. Their contributions shaped the initial layouts of numerous classic courses.
